Founded in 1886, the City of Wylie is located in Collin County just 24 miles from downtown Dallas. Possessing an outstanding school district, low crime rates, and an expanding business climate, Wylie is the ideal place for residents looking for a small town environment with easy access to big city amenities.

In 2005, Wylie’s population was estimated at 29,800 (North Central Texas Council of Governments). This estimate represents 3,757 new residents and a 14.4% increase from 2004.  And according to 2004 population estimates by the US Census, Wylie is the fastest-growing city with a population more than 25,000 in Texas. Overall, Wylie is the 97th largest city in Texas out of the 1,202 incorporated cities.

The City reduced its tax rate to $.695 for the 2004-05 fiscal year. This represents the fourth consecutive year of a tax reduction.   And in 2005, the City of Wylie was selected by the Dallas Business Journal as one of the Top 50 “Best Places to Work” in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

The City has been cited by North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) for its approach to development planning and preservation of its commercial downtown.

In 2002, the City of Wylie Fire Department received an ISO class rating of 1. Wylie is one of only six Texas cities to have an ISO class rating of 1.  And Wylie continues to have the lowest crime rate in Collin County for cities with a population greater than 10,000.

Rita and Truett Smith Public Library received the 2005 Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award by the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA).
